Participants | From Egypt to Brazil, from India to Kyrgyzstan to Europe, the past decades have seen a dramatic resurgence of religion in the public domain. This course invites students to reflect on this development, and explore its implications and the sociocultural, political and economic factors involved. Following a general introduction to anthropological and sociological theories of postsecularism and religious revival, students will engage with a selection of ethnographic case studies, drawn from a range of different societies and cultural contexts in order to facilitate comparison and establish similarities as well as divergences. By the end of the course, students will be able to grasp key concepts and debates in the anthropology of postsecularism, and have gained theoretical knowledge and analytical tools enabling them to critically examine comparative dimensions of religious change and situate these within their historical and global context. |
