This block seminar is designed to provide students a comprehensive understanding of the global water crisis, focusing specifically on the complex water governance challenges faced by Pakistan. The situation in Pakistan presents a unique paradox: the simultaneous decrease in water availability and "super floods" that are increasingly frequent. We will explore the interconnected issues of water scarcity, water distribution, and water management, in Pakistan. Furthermore, we will examine the significance of institutions and treaties, the legacies of colonial and modernisation policies, the effects of climate change, and the political economy of water. Course readings will concentrate on the historical, climatic, political, and socio-economic factors driving Pakistan's water crisis, alongside a comparison of these factors with broader global water governance challenges.
More details (on time and location) will follow soon. Medium of instruction will be bilingual: English and German. Most of the reading material will be in English.
