The course meets ONCE every week, so please select either Monday or Tuesday by signing into the appropriate group under Teilnehmende; Gruppen/Funktionen. Spaces are limited, so please make sure that you sign into one group as early as possible!!

Course Aims:
This course examines the dynamics of gender and politics in nineteenth-century Britain. We will focus on women and politics as part of the discussion of gender history. The class shall look at the position(s) of women in the 19th century, concepts of womanhood, female spheres and sources of women's agency. In the end, students will not only understand the origins of modern day feminism but more fundamentally learn to look at history as a negotiation of power between individuals and examine mechanisms of gaining power in a variety of ways. Students will work with primary texts such as photography, speeches, poems, film and cartoons in order to access the period via contemporary representations.
