Comment/Description

This seminar explores the so-called culture wars in 21st-century American society. It will start off by studying the theory of “culture wars” as introduced by James Davison Hunter. Subsequently, his theory will be tested in a range of case studies on debates around a variety of issues such as identity politics, DEI, gender, race, education, freedom of speech, history and memory, etc. It will emerge how people develop particular stances on an issue, what their arguments are based on and how this relates to past and present trends in defining the American nation.
Methodologically, we will be mainly concerned with the study of primary text such as speeches, first person accounts, podcasts, short stories, newspaper articles, film clips etc. We are going to practice the systematic analysis of such texts and ways of contextualizing and interpreting our findings. Basically, this is a continuation of what you practiced in the tutorials of the Basismodul but now with a focus on textual analysis

Regular Attendance
In order to ensure a learning curve and a successful Prüfungsleistung, it is strongly advised to attend the sessions regularly. You will be able to earn credit for active participation, i.e. showing that you have studied the set texts and are able to contribute to class discussions knowledgably.
