Course Description: This course aims to familiarize MA students with key theoretical and methodological issues in Marxist economic anthropology. We will approach the core conceptual and epistemological issues in the field through a close reading of seminal works by Maurice Godelier (The Mental and the Material: Thought, Economy and Society), Eric Wolf (Europe and the People Without History) and Sidney Mintz (Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History). The core texts will be accompanied by secondary readings through which the students will become familiar with the influence of these works as well as their place in the broader field of economic anthropology. At the end of the course, students will have working knowledge of the specificity of the Marxist approach in the field of economic anthropology as well as its legacy in contemporary anthropology. Students should also be able to assess and employ key concepts in Marxist economic anthropology as critical tools in contemporary debates about capitalist economic organization and its social foundation. |
