Kommentar/Beschreibung

Description:

In this seminar, we will look at the concepts of modern state, development, and democracy in South Asia, mainly in its post-independence phase. An important aim will be to gain an in-depth understanding of the logic(s) on which the modern state has and continues to function in the South Asian context. Simultaneously, the seminar will examine development's symbolic and material meanings in the postcolonial context. This will be done by looking at modern infrastructure development in the post-independence period and the conflicts it continues to generate. Lastly, the seminar will look at the practice of democracy under structural conditions of inequality in South Asia. The concept of democracy will also serve as a thread between the state and its developmental agenda. Although postcolonial theoretical frameworks will mainly influence the seminar, it will have an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from various fields to provide a comprehensive understanding. Also, we will rely on comparative analysis, critically examining the factors that have shaped historical and contemporary political processes in South Asia. The aim will be to contest dominant and prevailing notions of political science.

Structure:
The seminar will be structured into six meetings. The first three meetings, each lasting two hours, will be regular sessions introducing the main theoretical discussions. The last three meetings will be conducted as a Block, each thematically divided into State, Development, and Democracy. This thematic division will allow for a more focused and in-depth exploration of each concept.

Expectations:
Your active participation is crucial to the success of this seminar. I expect all the students to read the assigned texts thoroughly. Please bring questions to class and be ready to talk with your classmates. Many discussions will occur through different methods, including role-play, mind mapping, and group work on in-depth text analysis.

Medium of Instruction:
All the assigned texts will be in English, and the medium of instruction will also be English.
