Comment/Description

The course offers a comprehensive examination of the life and writing of Dylan Marlais Thomas (1914-53), one of the major British poets of the twentieth century and arguably Wales’ best-known and most beloved writer. Famous for the passion, humour, and stylistic adventurousness of his writing, Thomas both represented and challenged the concerns of British modernism in the first half of the twentieth century. His poetry and prose show the influence of symbolism, surrealism, and metaphysical poetry, and are distinctive in their exploration of life and death, sex, love, nature, violence, the body, and sensual perceptions.
We will discuss and analyse selected poems, stories, and the ‘play for voices’ Under Milk Wood (1954). In addition to positioning Thomas in his literary and historical context, the course will be aimed at experiencing his work as a source of both aesthetic pleasure and emotional and intellectual knowledge.

Students are expected to buy the primary text (see below) and read the play Under Milk Wood before the beginning of the teaching time.

The unmarked assignment will be a short (10-15 mins) ‘work-in progress’ presentation of the term paper, which will be the module exam (8.000 words, to be submitted by the end of March 2022). Topics will be provided, but students are also welcome to develop their own topics. Approach, structure, and the writing of a term paper will be explained and practiced in the sessions.

The course will take place and will have to be attended in physical presence (under observation of the 3G rule).

Please note that prior registration (deadline: 10 October 2021) for the course via StudIP is mandatory.
