Comment/Description

This course will provide a survey of literature written about New York City. Together, we will explore a wide range of fascinating texts from the early 19th century to the present in order to gain a better understanding of the most outstanding and symbolic city of the United States. Our close encounters with New York will involve not only literary texts, but also texts from urban studies, critical essays as well as discussions on photographs, paintings, graphic novels, and films.

Required texts:
Jay McInerney, Bright Lights, Big City (1984; Edition: Bloomsbury Publishing, 2007).

Other texts and novels will be made available in Stud.IP.
