Comment/Description

This seminar will examine the reflection of Great Britain's history, tradition, and cultural heritage in various celebratory events staged since 1945. Beyond the study of self-enactment in such concrete events, the seminar will explore concepts of identity (national, political, cultural) and memory (cultural, collective) as fundamental fields of inquiry within Cultural Studies.

Possible events we are going to cover will likely include
the 1951 Festival of Britain,
the Notting Hill Carnival,
the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games,
and Royal events, not least the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, which will be celebrated in June.
