Kommentar/Beschreibung

This class is designed to help students understand cultural artifacts within their historical and social context. By exploring the theories of gender, race, and class, students will gain a deeper insight into the ways in which these pervasive categories continue to shape people's lives.

The course will involve regular readings, discussions, and student participation. At the start of the semester, each student will choose a cultural artifact to study, and over the course of the term, they will use the theories covered in class to analyze and peel away at the various layers of meaning embedded in their artifact. This could be anything from a song or novel, historical dresses or hairstyles, an architectural structure, a TikTok video, a manifesto, a painting, a Reddit thread – or whatever it is you are interested in.

The course is designed to provide students with a solid introduction to the fundamental concepts of gender, race, and class and to encourage critical thinking and active engagement with the material.
