Kommentar:
The aim of this course is to examine the most important historical and contemporary debates in the anthropology of gender. The focus is on the universal principles underlying male dominance (e.g. nature/culture; domestic/public); a further focus is on the relationships between gender, gender and sexuality. Once we have studied these aspects, we will look at how gender articulates with other forms of difference such as race, class and nation. We will then look at gender-specific perspectives of power, at the interaction of agency and structure in the production of femininity and masculinity. The subsequent seminars will deal with questions of cultural representation and cultural expression; gender and body politics; feminist positionalities, methods and ethics. The final session will deal with feminist transnational activism and transgender theory and activism. In this course, we will not only examine various debates in gender anthropology, but also explore how qualitative methods of ethnographic research further diversify our research and produce knowledge in gender studies
