Kommentar/Beschreibung

One of the most well-known and renowned English writers, Jane Austen (1775-1817) has been studied with regard to her novels’ portrayal of the social decorum of the middle classes, the distinctive subtle irony and humour of her fiction, and her works’ implicit and explicit observations of the Regency period. An acknowledged innovator of the novel, Austen significantly contributed to shaping the genre: her combination of social comedy, moral observation, and psychologically precise narrative techniques defined it as a “reflective” literary form that presents modern fictional characters, which are portrayed as achieving personal development through “reconciliations of the individual and the social” (Deidre Shauna Lynch).
The seminar will examine Austen’s novels Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Persuasion (1818) in light of their engagement with both Enlightenment and Romantic notions of the modern individual that draw attention to female education and social distinction, the connection between experience and knowledge, and the (ir)rationality of human nature.

This course can be attended in general preparation of the Staatsexamenklausur „Arbeit unter Aufsicht“ in Spring 2024. Further preparation can be obtained in the Forschungskolloquium.
