Kommentar/Beschreibung

‘Political action has come to be a surrogate for salvation; but no political project can deliver humanity from its natural condition. However radical, political programmes are expedients – modest devices for coping with recurring evils.’ (John Gray, Straw Dogs, 2003)

In spite of philosophical and discursive assertions that concepts such as ‘evil’ are rooted in and shaped by historical and social circumstances, the phenomenon has retained a fascination that seems to rest in part on its ability to offer uncomfortable explanations of the supposedly inexplicable. Is ‘evil’ an act or an intention? Is it the refusal of a particular belief, or the opposite of a moral quality? This course does not attempt to answer these questions, but aims to provide the opportunity to contemplate and further develop them. We will look at philosophical approaches and interpretations as well as aesthetics of evil when exploring contemporary primary sources ranging from a horror novel, essayistic and biographical writing, and a TV series, in addition to selected contributions from cultural criticism (Eagleton), the history of ideas (Hobbes, Gray), and British literary history (Rossetti). Students will engage with representations of historical, fictional, collective, and individual acts of evil, and will be expected to discuss these as well as the principles that have labelled them thus.

This course can be attended in general preparation of the Staatsexamenklausur „Arbeit unter Aufsicht“ in Spring 2024. Further preparation can be obtained in the Forschungskolloquium.
