Kommentar/Beschreibung

The Book of Exodus has come down to us in a number of witnesses, especially the Masoretic text (MT), the Samaritan text (SP), the Septuagint (LXX) and a number of quite important fragments from Qumran. A close look at these different witnesses reveals that in fact we have to deal not with one uniform text, but with different texts. A number of differences between these texts cannot sufficiently be dealt with as text-critical variants, i.e. resulting from the corruption of a supposed “Urtext”, but should be dealt with on the level of literary history.
The seminar aims at examining the textual development of the book of Exodus as reflected in its textual witnesses focusing on four test cases, taken from various parts of the book and representing potentially different literary sources: chapters 12, 27, 32 and 40. Special attention will be given to the ‘harmonistic’ text-form represented in the Samaritan Pentateuch and the ‘pre-Samaritan’ scrolls from Qumran vis-à-vis the Masoretic Text, the Septuagint and the other Exodus scrolls from the Judean Desert. We will see how the fluidity of the text affects the literary structure of the book and how the interpretation of individual passages is transformed when moving from one text-form to another. Good knowledge of Biblical Hebrew and Greek is required, but no previous knowledge of either Qumran or Samaritan Hebrew will be assumed, and we will introduce some basic codicological and paleographic aspects of the Paleo-Hebrew and Samaritan manuscripts in order to enable students to collate such textual sources on their own.
