(NEW SCHEDULE -- APPLICATIONS DUE JULY 10)
Over the last decades, digitisation has given new impulses to the preservation and research of oriental manuscripts and archive material. Massive and long term endeavours launched in the past years have already begun to change the field of the art and the skills required from young academics.
This week-long seminar in Halle (August 19-23, 2019) will acquaint a small group of students from Halle and Balamand (Lebanon) with the digital tools necessary to work with Arabic manuscripts and archive material. The schedule includes an excursion to visit the research manuscript library in Gotha.
After the completion of the seminar, up to three students from Halle will be eligible for a fully funded internship at Balamand's Digital Humanities Center, where they will cooperate with Lebanese students to catalogue and work with newly acquired archive material from the Ottoman period. The internships are scheduled for September 2019 (Sep. 8-29) and can not be postponed.
Please register here in StudIP if you are interested in participating. Please note that additional application letters may be required before the final selection of participants and interns.

The program offers full funding for five workshop participants and three interns. The selection of candidates for the workshop and for the internships will be based on two separate rounds of application. In both rounds, the most important criteria for approval are: knowledge of Arabic and English, interest in the methods and the sources of the workshop, grades, and interest in academic exchange with Lebanese partners.

1. Application for the workshop:
The deadline for applications to participate in the workshop (August 19-23, 2019) is Wednesday, July 10, 11 am. Please send a letter stating your personal motivation to participate and a recent transcript of records (Löwenportal Notenauszug) to: bjoern.bentlage@orientphil.uni-halle.de
Candidates may be asked to attend a personal interview on Friday, July 12, 10 am to 12 pm (noon). The selection of participants will be finalized and communicated on the same day.

2. Application for internships:
Only workshop participants will be eligible for the fully funded internships in Balamand, Lebanon (September 8-29). Similar to the first selection process, candidates will be asked to (re-) state their motivation in writing, enclose a transcript of records, and possibly participate a personal interview.
