Kommentar/Beschreibung

Is the history of the early church the history of great men? What happens when we expand our vision of the Christian past to include women, non-elite persons, non-orthodox writers, and non-Latin or Greek sources? This seminar uses resources from feminist theology and contemporary queer and feminist theory to both grapple with problems of studying women and queerfolk given the archive available, and to introduce students to feminist issues from early Christianity. Topics include beliefs about marriage, sexuality and asceticism (Augustine, Jerome, Jovinian), female leadership (Melania, Thekla, and Paula), and female saints and martyrs (Syncletica, Perpetua, Mary of Egypt).

This seminar will be taught bilingually in coordination with the language skills of those present, but with the intention of introducing students to contemporary English-language scholarship.
