Kommentar/Beschreibung

Travel writing brings the traveler into contact with the other. Between ‘here’ and ‘there’, ‘home’ and ‘abroad’ and ‘self’ and ‘other’, travel inspires the traveler to reflect upon who she is. With a focus on the 19th century, we will not only contend with the complex intersections of gender and (national) identity constructions from multiple racialized perspectives, but you will also gain an understanding of the history of the 19th century from the point of view of American women. We will interrogate multiple types of travel, from leisure and activist endeavors undertaken to promote feminism and abolitionism to immigration, imperial missions, and forced migrations.
On a methodological level, the aim of the seminar is twofold: 1) You will sharpen your analytical skills through the practice of critical readings of these primary texts through the techniques of close and wide reading, informed by approaches from New Historicism, Feminist Criticism and Postcolonial Theory. 2) You will learn how to communicate the results of your scholarship digitally in the form of a blog and how to handle the tools you need to do so.
