Comment/Description

Course Description
This course is concerned with the realities and the legacy of slavery in a transatlantic world. We are going to explore the different agents involved in the trade in order to clarify the enormous extent to which colonial Europe was implicated in this system that boosted and was part of modern-day capitalism. Further¬more, we will give special attention to the testimonies of the enslaved, their experience, and agency, in order to turn away from a binary concept of active enslaver and passive enslaved. Finally, we are going to explore the ongoing legacy of enslavement, its traces in modern society on a social, political and economic level as well as the way it is being commemorated. In the end, it should become apparent how much the Western world has been shaped by colonialisms’ power dynamics and how today’s society is still implicated and far from being de-colonized. Students will study all of this via secondary and primary sources during the course. At the end, they will have to design research projects of their own, in order to explore aspects of transatlantic slavery and its legacy in more depth.
