Kommentar/Beschreibung

Gardens, markets, courts, the dressing room, coffeehouses—spaces of sociability represent realms of communication and personal interaction in which wo/man—as quintessentially sociable animal—meets others engaging in discussions and debate, moral and political, social and scientific. They may be places of distinction or derision, of (illicit) intimacy or (virtuous) pleasure. They include and exclude, they inform and educate, and characterise the values and practices of (modern) human society.
We shall discuss four such spaces of sociability, crucial to and characteristic of (modern) British society: the (Tudor) court, the (eighteenth-century) coffeehouse, the (Victorian) gentlemen's club, and (twenty-first-century) social media, considering not only central notions (e.g. patronage, sympathy) and figures (e.g. the courtier, the gentleman), but also socio-cultural controversies related to each of these spaces.
