Lexicology: The word stock of English – past and present

Course outline:
This seminar will cover selected topics concerned with the history and structure of the English word stock. By giving an historical outline of the major phases of lexical borrowing we shall try to categorise and classify the different etymological strata of English and give a socio-historical description of their impact on the language and its users. Secondly, we shall have a look at different models of the lexicon and explore different ways of structuring it, i.e. core v. periphery, regional distribution, social stratification. We then move on to mechanisms and agents of change such as semantic change, social change, temporal change, etc. and, finally, to “verbal hygiene” (Deborah Cameron), resulting in the replacement of tabooed words.
