Lernorganisation Prospective participants should note that this course demands a significant level of dedication and active participation. Weekly sessions will involve extensive reading and writing assignments. Expect to engage with a reading workload of approximately 15-30 pages per week, with reading materials provided throughout the semester.

This is not a lecture class. It is a seminar characterized by the presentation and discussion of information and ideas resulting from various reading requirements. These activities take place within the seminar room. This format requires participants to be present in the sessions and to be thoroughly prepared in terms of content to participate competently in this specific academic framework.

Regular attendance is expected, and students must ensure that their extracurricular activities do not interfere with their ability to dedicate adequate time to this course.
Leistungsnachweis Students can earn two types of credit in this class:

1) A "Studienleistung" is recorded in the university's computer system when all assignments set during the lecture period have been submitted in full, on time, and in good quality.
2) Students receive credit for a "Modulleistung" upon successfully completing the "Modulabschlussprüfung". Depending on the number of participants, the final examination will consist of either an oral or a written exam.

Detailed instructions on the nature of the final exam will be given at an appropriate time during the semester.

Kommentar/Beschreibung

This class will familiarize students with historical events and ideas that are crucial for an understanding of the United States as a nation. Participants will be given opportunities to engage in analyses and in-depth discussions of topics ranging from American geography to deeply ingrained American convictions, including core political principles, national myths, and perspectives on social relationships. The class is designed as a forum to acquire factual knowledge and to promote critical reflection on quintessentially American attitudes and ideas. It also invites students to scrutinize issues of national bias and the perpetuation of stereotypes.
