Kommentar/Beschreibung

Before World War I, the US was brimming with optimism: The combination of the world’s largest economy with military strength promised the beginning of a new era of American imperialism. World War I, however, undermined the pre-war optimism and triggered profound cultural changes in the US. In this course, we will examine the impact of World War I on American culture and trace the transformation of American society into a ‘modern’ one. We will first examine the historical events of World War I and then explore various topics ranging from Modernist art and Expressionist film to the Lost Generation, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Jazz age.
