Comment/Description

June 6, 2024 will mark the 80th anniversary of the Allied Forces' landing in Normandy, a concerted effort
by 12 nations widely considered to have been a turning point within WWII. Taking the representation and legacy of D-Day and WWII as a point of departure, this seminar aims to train students in the field of museum and memory studies. During the field trip, we will engage with memory places (lieux de memoire) throughout Normandy, including landscapes, museums, war cemeteries, harbors, and memorials to examine what narratives are told and how. As the memory landscape of Normandy is shaped by several nations, including France, the US, the UK, Canada, and Germany, it provides material for in-depth comparative cultural analysis.

The field trip will be accompanied by three preparatory and one follow-up session. The seminar is part of the module KuWi V. Arrangements regarding "Anerkennung" for other cultural studies modules will be made individually.
