Kommentar/Beschreibung

William Shakespeare’s mature tragedies King Lear (1605) and Macbeth (1606) have been valued for their portrayal of good and evil, suffering, and the question of reconciliation. These philosophical themes transcend topical political issues to pursue the human journey as a conversion, and which portray the soul of man – and especially the soul of a ruler – as a structural force that threatens to destabilize a society when the monarch becomes unstable or turns evil. Starting with a historical overview of Jacobean England and a consideration of the key concerns of the tragedy, the course will discuss the genre with regard to the selected Shakespearean plays and the ways in which they exemplify the legitimacy of authority, ambition, and power, desire and justice, love and betrayal, and madness and ageing.

Studienleistungen:
• Regular attendance and oral participation
• In-depth knowledge of the reading material
• Short tasks in class and an oral presentation

Prüfungsleistung:
• Final written examination (“Abschlussklausur”)

Students are expected to read the tragedies before the beginning of the teaching period.
