The course makes use of case examples from practice throughout and encourages students to explore the implications for practice in their own presentations as well as to base their arguments on current scientific literature
Leistungsnachweis Short presentation in class + test at the end of the semester (MC questions)
The final grade will be calculated based on 1) your presentation 2) MC test

Kommentar/Beschreibung

Aims
- Awareness of innovation capability as being a fundamental prerequisite for companies to survive and thrive in their competitive environment
- knowledge of basic innovation modes (imitation, fundamental/radical/disruptive innovation, incremental innovation, continuous innovation)
- ability to analyze innovation as a complex phenomenon located at different levels of analysis (individual entrepreneur, firm, national and global scale) and shaped by different actors (firms, networks, state, international institutions) which act as institutional and social filters for innovation outcomes
- ability to critically assess the impact of innovation including its adverse side effects and inefficiencies
- knowledge of salience of innovation both as regards its impact on firm, national and global economic outcome variables (productivity, growth) and its implications for society at large
- Ability to select and apply suitable tools and concepts to model innovation processes from fields such as game theory, institutional economics, geography of innovation
- Ability to critically discuss different modes of governance of innovation, including Intellectual Property Rights (e. g., patents, copyright, standards,…) and other means of appropriability mechanisms (e. g., product complexity, lead-time, secrecy,…), governance regimes with practical case examples, R&D and cluster policies, international research and policy perspectives
