Learning organisation This course is designed for students who enjoy reading and discussing literature. We will discuss the concept of multiculturalism, selected multicultural phenomena and their literary representation in British novels that are set in contemporary London. The course will engage with their depiction of ‘what happens when cultures meet, coexist and eventually mix’.

Required reading (to be finished before the first session in June):
Zadie Smith – White Teeth (2000) Penguin Books UK, ISBN: 978-0140276336 / 560 p.
Monica Ali – Brick Lane (2003) Black Swan, ISBN: 978-0552771153 / 512 p.
Nick Hornby – A Long Way Down (2005) Penguin Books Ltd., ISBN: 978-0241969939 / 272 p.

These novels have to be brought in print to the seminar. Please make sure to either purchase EXACTLY the editions given above, or if you choose to buy second hand make sure your book has EXACTLY the number of pages given above. This is absolutely necessary so that we can all work with the same texts and pagination.
