COURSE GOALS AND DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this seminar is twofold: We shall explore the history of British and American film as well as how British and American films participated in the national historical discourse. We will approach the issue from a historical, an analytical, and a theoretical angle. Students will study the history of film and the film industries, cinematographic techniques and styles. One main focus is on film analysis (genres, cinematographic language, etc.).
After a thorough schooling in “reading” films, students will explore examples of filmic presentations of historical phenomena in order to elicit traditions and trends in filmic presentations of the British and the American past.
