Art/Form Weekly lectures, with students required to register for one of the available review/discussion (Ubung) weekly sessions.
Teilnehmende The course is intended for fifth semester BA students to fulfill the requirement to attend successfully a course conducted in a foreign language. Students in other years of study may register on a space available basis.
Voraussetzungen Fifth semester BA status in Political Science. Students from other faculties and years admitted on a space available basis.
Lernorganisation Weekly lectures, with additional attendance at one or more Ubung sessions weekly. Written final examination (in English) during semester examination period
Leistungsnachweis Student grades will be assigned on the following basis:
End of semester examination 50%
Attendance and participation in Ubung sessions: 30%
Attendance and participation in Vorlesung sessions: 20 %

Sonstiges Lectures and Ubung sessions are conducted in English. Course readings are primarily in English.
The principal textbooks for the course are: Lowi, Theodore, Benjamin Ginsberg, and Kenneth Shepsle American Government, 2012, available in the Political Science Library and James Q. Wilson, John Dilulio American Government: Institutions and Policies, 2011, also available in the Political Science Library. Additional readings will be supplied in electronic form. Copies of more recent editions of both text books can be ordered through Amazon, as well as e-book versions of both books.

Kommentar/Beschreibung

This lecture class is intended to satisfy the requirement for fifth semester students to take a course in a foreign language. The course lectures will survey major structures and processes of American government and politics. In addition to examining the role of the Congress, the Prsident, the Supreme Court, the bureaucracy and interest groups, the lectures will also examine the early action in the American presidential election campaign of 2012. Particular attention will be placed on the early presidential primary elections that are scheduled in December and January, 2011-2012. This course is recommended for international students.
