Imagining unreal places and alternative social conditions appears to be a constant in the history of English literature. We will try to follow this motif through several centuries by reading exemplary and also lesser-known texts from a variety of genres (novel, essay, poetry) and observe various functions that such texts may serve (e.g. pleas for change, voicing of critique, presenting alternatives, compensation, escapism).
