Comment/Description

Course outline:
Little more than a decade ago, not much work had been done on the language of the 18th and 19th centuries. Probably for the reasons that for historical linguistics the period was not removed far enough from the present, or, simply, that nothing much of linguistic interest had happened.
Now, however, Late Modern English (1700-1900) is receiving much scholarly attention, because during these two centuries the English-speaking societies were transformed dramatically. For instance, the Industrial Revolution led to the urbanisation of society and, as a consequence, to increased geographical and social mobility, resulting in linguistic insecurity of the middle classes. New media such as novels, newspapers, and advertisements had an impact on the language. “At the beginning of the period, overseas varieties of the language were barely distinguishable from those in Britain; by the end of it, some had developed independent and distinct standards” (Hundt and Lenker 2006: 440). Thus, there is still a lot to explore on all levels of linguistic description ranging from pronunciation and spelling via the lexicon and syntax to language use in various regions, registers, text types and (post-) colonial varieties.
