Comment/Description

Course Outline:
This lecture course continues the historical outline of the English language from the summer term by providing an overview from the beginning of Middle English (ME) in the 12th century to the end of the Early Modern period in the 18th century.
Apart from the far-ranging changes that occurred in the structure of the language we will also deal with the socio-historical embedding of language change which, for instance, led to the re-emergence of English in the second half of the ME-period, the change from a vernacular to a fully fledged language during the Renaissance and to the beginning of standardisation and codification from the 17th century onwards.
Even though it is advisable to have attended the previous course it is also possible to start with this one.
