Comment/Description

The first Christians to encounter Muslims were not Latin-speaking Christians from the western Mediterranean, but rather Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and Mesopotamia. The course examines the history of early interactions between Eastern Christianity and Islam as recorded in written sources from the early seventh to the ninth centuries. Thus, the course will focus on the wide range of genres in which Christian authors wrote about Islam. The course sheds light on the complicated set of religious and cultural exchanges and asks how Eastern Christians navigated a world in which Christianity and Islam were much less distinct than is commonly imagined.
