The course includes theoretical discussions, guest lectures, self-quiz in ILIAS and practical empirical tasks in a mini-student project.
The course will start on November 5, 2019 and will take place every Tuesday till February 4, 2020. Three additional classes will be held on November 28, 2019, January 9, 2020, and January 16, 2020. Check StudIP regularly for the updates.

The course is primarily designed for master-level students in Agricultural Sciences, International Area Studies and Management of Natural Resources at MLU Halle who are interested in social research methods. We will cover fundamentals of both quantitative and qualitative research methods in social sciences. Other interested students can join the course upon request and mutual agreement.
Aims and objectives of this course:
- Refresh and strengthen knowledge on social research methods
- Improve understanding of fundamental concepts in science philosophy
- Acquire knowledge on research designs for institutional analysis and policy evaluation
- Study basic techniques for data collection and data analysis in interdisciplinary, particularly, in complex social-environmental and policy-institutional contexts
- Develop skills to sample, collect and analyze data, and prepare for thesis writing
- Understand specific challenges of field research and learn trade-offs in social research
