Comment/Description

This course is designed for students who enjoy thinking about and discussing politics. It aims to provide a thorough exploration of historical contexts, legal and institutional pillars, and selected discursive aspects of political culture in the United Kingdom. Topics that will be addressed include the development and institutions of Britain’s parliamentary monarchy, the principles of electoral representation and participation, political parties and their ideologies, the ‘first-past-the-post’ system, and the role of the media in political communication.

Please note that prior registration (deadline: 17 October 2022) for the course via StudIP is mandatory.

As a set text, we will be using the most recent (fifth) edition of Exploring British Politics (2021) by Mark Garnett, Peter Dorey, and Philip Lynch that students are expected to read over the course of the teaching term. Additional sources will be made available in StudIP and/or in class.

Required reading (please make sure to purchase EXACTLY this edition):
Mark Garnett, Peter Dorey, and Philip Lynch. Exploring British Politics. Fifth Edition. London: Routledge, 2021. ISBN 13-978-0367142407. Print.
(Just as it says: the PRINT edition (2021) must be purchased, NOT the/any e-book editions)

Further Reading:
The course book and additional sources will be made available on our shelf (“Semesterapparat”) in the university library, Steintor Campus.
