Comment/Description

Native American history is a history of resistance. From the onset of colonization, Indigenous nations fought for sovereignty and self-determination, drawing from, and developing traditions of protest and resurgence. Regulations and government reforms imposed upon Native American communities have continuously infringed treaties and declarations, and thereby oppressed Native American cultures. With a focus on the 20th and 21st centuries, in this seminar we will discuss and shed light on multiple examples of Native American resistance against U.S. anti-Native American policies and sentiment. Most importantly, we will look at the paths found by Indigenous nations to reclaim space that was taken away from them by interrogating examples from different stages and political climates: from resistance to cultural assimilation in the late 19th and early 20th century, to the oft-cited protests during the Red Power Era in the 1960s and 70s, to contemporary struggles for self-determination and social and environmental justice. In so doing, we will approach primary texts and examples of resistance with the methodological practices of close readings and wide readings, thereby critically reflecting and engaging with theoretical lenses from settler colonial studies, environmental justice theory, as well as Indigenous philosophy. Analyzing and discussing primary sources as well as contextualizing sites of protest within the larger political and social construct of the US nation state is at the heart of this seminar. You will also learn how to present your analyses digitally (via blog entries).
