Kommentar/Beschreibung

Course Outline:
In this course we shall be studying important “linguistic” texts from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth century. What unites all these texts is their focus on the English language, and more particularly, on the development of linguistic thought avant la lettre in England.
From the point of view of contemporary linguistics such a retrospective study of seminal texts from the pre-linguistic epochs is important in two ways: On the one hand, it helps us to assess the modern linguistic theories and approaches. On the other hand, we can discover that ideas, theoretical tenets, etc. were in existence, albeit it in a different shape, centuries ago.

Robins, R.H. (1990) A Short History of Linguistics. Longman: London; 3rd ed.
A reader with the primary texts to be studied will be made available.

Reserve Bookshelf:
A reserve bookshelf will be put up in the departmental library and an extensive bibliography of secondary sources and suggested topics for term papers will be available from January 31st.
