This course examines the depiction of Jamaica in Hollywood film and the local film industry's reaction to the stereotypes thereby created. First, we are going to explore postcolonial film theory and the imperial Hollywood gaze on Jamaica. Second, we will examine Jamaican film in order to juxtapose Jamaican self-representation to the neocolonial international gaze determined by the tourist industry and Western cinema. Our analytical focus will be on iconographic representations, including landscapes, characters, music and recurring themes.
