Course Description:
The course is concerned with the role and the image of the British monarchy. Royalty is an integral part of British national identity and the way royals are depicted at a particular point in time, tells us a lot about the role of the monarchy itself but also about the state of national self-perception. We shall explore the function and perception of individual monarchs (George III, Victoria, George V, Elizabeth II) during their reigns as well as in contemporary British media. Special focus will be on visual cultural memory. The course will acquaint you with historical data on selected monarchs and help you explore the perception and construction of an image of these monarchs during and after their reign. In order to do so, you will be trained in the basics of an iconographic reading of visual representations. Ultimately, the seminar concentrates on the medial construction of “imagined” monarchies and sheds light on mechanisms of national identity formation.

Course Work: You will find all required course work in the schedule (upcoming). The course is connected to an ILIAS-Learning Module which you will be able to access via Stud.IP (Lernobjekte), starting April 20. There you will find tasks for every week's session. Readings are always due before the session! I will try to incorporate face-to-face sessions via WebEx Training. Please familiarize yourselves with this tool, ideally use it to chat to fellow students, friends, or family to test it. I am aware that not everyone has access for all different reasons. So, I am making sure that success in this course is entirely independent of your ability to join synchronous sessions.
