Kommentar/Beschreibung

This course is a part of the AM II on genre; we will explore the multifaceted portrayal of love in British theater across different time periods and forms of plays. In the course of our seminar, we will consider in detail the nuanced depictions of love in four seminal British works of drama, analyzing how playwrights manipulate characters, language, and themes to convey the complexities of human emotion, embedded into social conventions, and with an eye to different historical contexts. Through an in-depth study of Shakespeare's domestic tragedy "Romeo & Juliet," Etherege's Restoration comedy "The Man of Mode," Wilde's social problem play "A Woman of No Importance," and Mark Norman and Tom Stoppard's romantic comedy screenplay "Shakespeare in Love," students will critically examine the changes to love's representation on the stage. By comparing these texts, students will gain insights into shifts in cultural norms, dramatic and epic techniques, and conceptualizations of self and (desired) other that shape the portrayal of love in drama.
