Media Adaptations of a Novel

This course focuses on the influential 19th-century anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin; or Life Among the Lowly (1852) by Harriet Beecher-Stowe and its various media adaptations over the next century. We will first analyze the serialized novel and place it in diverse literary (-theoretical) and cultural contexts (e.g., minstrel show, melodrama and the melodramatic mode, slave narrative, feminist theory), before we will learn more about adaptation theory and its central tenets. This will prepare us for our study of a wide spectrum of adaptations in drama (e.g., “Tom Shows”), fiction, film (e.g., Edwin S. Porter’s 1903 version of Uncle Tom’s Cabin), animated cartoons, etc. Our course will enable us to trace the controversial critical reception history of the book, the popularization of racist stereotypes, and the critical attack of the novel in the 20th century.

Required texts:

Harriet Beecher-Stowe, Uncle Tom’s Cabin: A Norton Critical Editon. 3rd ed. Norton, 2017. (please purchase this copy)

Additional course material will be made available on the ILIAS platform.
