Module assignments

Comment/Description

The seminar will explore the portrayal of family and friendship in British films of the New Labour Years (1994-2010). We will look at selected depictions of such relationships with regard to how culture shapes individual lives, social networks, and the values they appear to embody, all contextualized with a critical consideration of British people’s changing economic realities and circumstances in the period. Following an overview of the New Labour period and an introduction to aspects and terminology of film analysis, our discussion will include the following themes: idea(l)s of private and social bonding, changing structures of communal life, national symbolism, and the promises and pitfalls of individualistic self-realization as a means of ‘wealth creation’ in the so-called ‘new economy’ of the period.

Please note that the course includes required viewing. Participants are expected to obtain and watch all films prior to the scheduled class discussions. The films can be accessed through commercial providers online, are available as inexpensive DVD or in the university library. Additional obligatory reading (secondary sources) will be provided at the beginning of the teaching period.

This course can be attended in general preparation of the Staatsexamenklausur “Arbeit unter Aufsicht” in Autumn 2024. Further preparation can be obtained in the Forschungskolloquium.
