Comment/Description

19th Century American Short Story

The rise of the American short story exhibited an unprecedented creativity: Authors reflected on the genre and experimented with form, language, and themes. We will trace the development of the American short story from its beginnings to the early modernist period and examine classic and less well-known short stories from a diverse group of authors, including Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Chesnutt, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Kate Chopin, and Zitkala-Ša. We will conduct close readings and discuss the literary texts in light of recent criticism and theoretical approaches (e.g., transnationalism, gender and ethnic studies, and short story theories). Our course will be supplemented with a guest lecture on Poe and his work.
