Comment/Description

This seminar aims to train students in the field of museum studies, taking as a point of departure the representation of transatlantic slavery in the British port cities. From June 18-24, 2023 we will be visiting London and Liverpool.

During the field trip, we will examine how Britain’s involvement in the triangular trade is remembered and especially, which agency is given to the enslaved. As part of the trip, we are going to visit the Museum of London Docklands and the Albert and Victoria Museum in London as well as the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool. In addition, we will look at postcolonial urban environments to see how both cities engage with their colonial past.

During the field trip, students have the chance to
… engage with museal strategies of coping with Britain’s colonial past and its legacy;
… examine how colonialism is interwoven into cityscapes;
… experience a cultural space first-hand, as well as study and interpret it with the help of the theories imparted in class.

The field trip will be accompanied by two preparatory meetings and a follow-up session.
The seminar is part of the IKEAS module KuWi V but students of other programs are welcome to apply.
The number of participants is limited to 16 people. Students will be selected by Julia Nitz and Esther Wetzel on the basis of their applications.
