Course outline:
This seminar will cover selected topics concerned with the history and structure of the English word stock. By giving an historical outline of the major phases of lexical borrowing we shall try to categorise and classify the different etymological strata of English and give a socio-historical description of their impact on the language users. Secondly, we shall have a look at different models of the lexicon, including the representation of vocabulary in selected dictionaries. In addition to this, we will also touch upon the mental lexicon, i.e. how words are stored in the minds of speakers and, resulting from this, questions connected with learning and teaching vocabulary.
