Comment/Description

Course Objectives:
The seminar explores the history of the representation of the Anglophone Caribbean in Western film and juxtaposes this tradition with native cinematic portrayals. We are going to explore cinema as a neocolonial force and look at the way Hollywood and the West in general produced an image of the Caribbean guided by the colonizers gaze. In addition, we shall look at the way Caribbean cinema responded to foreign depictions by creating a filmic tradition of its own.

Required reading and viewing will be announced in the seminar schedule.
