Comment/Description

The course is an exploration of the historical, political as well as cultural developments in the post-Civil War South (1865–1915). Emphasis is on the contest for political but most of all cultural and discursive supremacy, in determining who rules and who defines the New South. We are going to look at political pamphlets, travel literature, fiction, journalism, war memoirs and speeches from Northerners, Southerners, white planter elite, former slaves, male and female, who engage in a war of words and images in creating a new Southern landscape, ideology, and identity.
