Comment/Description

This course attempts to study cultures of protest by examining three important British protest movements from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: the Chartists, the Suffragettes, and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Areas to explore will include class, gender, discourses of criminalisation, practises of (civil) disobedience and forms of creative protest, the appropriation of public spaces, and violence.

This course will take place in a virtual environment, with a mixture of mostly synchronous sessions and an occasional period of asynchronous self-study.
