Kommentar/Beschreibung

Since the so-called ‘Scottish Renaissance’ in the early twentieth century, the interest in Scottish culture and literature has increased inside and outside of Scotland. Scottish poetry in particular has been acknowledged for its formal and thematic diversity, which includes visual poetry, sonnets, metaphysical explorations of landscapes and animal life, intertextualities, and, of course, various humorous modes and moods. Proceeding from an overview of Scottish culture and literature in twentieth-century Britain, this course will focus on lyrical forms and motifs in the work of three renowned Scottish poets: Edwin Morgan, Norman MacCaig, and Carol Ann Duffy. In addition to discovering their formal and thematic diversity, we will discuss why their work can be described as both distinctively Scottish, and as appealing to a more general audience in order to understand how these writers have placed Scottish poetry on the global literary map.

Additional primary texts and a variety of secondary sources will be made available in the course and on StudIP. There will also be a library shelf (‘Semesterapparat’) for students in the library branch on Steintor Campus. There will be short assignments during the semester, and a work-in-progress presentation. The module exam (“Modulprüfungsleistung”) will be a term paper (8.000 words) on a topic provided; students are also welcome to develop their own topics. Approach, structure, and the writing of a term paper will be explained and practiced in the sessions.

This course can be attended in general preparation of the Staatsexamenklausur “Arbeit unter Aufsicht” in Autumn 2024. Further preparation can be obtained in the Forschungskolloquium.
