Introduction and aims of the seminar, Understanding of the ecosystem services concept - experiment, Preparation/preliminary discussion concerning to the excursion, Study trip, Wrap-up of the excursion, Wrap-up of the excursion, Ecosystem Services indicators, Mapping of Ecosystem services in peri-urban landscapes, Final presentation and discussion. Planning for WS 2019-2020
We experience the “urban age”! More and more people live in the extend of cities. Different monocentric cities establish vital connections between each other, resulting in creation of polycentric agglomerations or conurbations, which can be described as “urban systems”, composed of urban areas and peri-urban areas. The urban area contains the city center, inner urban and suburban areas, while the peri-urban area encompasses urban fringe and urban periphery.
Urbanization became a global and cross-boundary phenomenon, but characterized with different specificities in different contexts (e.g. global North and global South). Nevertheless, what this phenomenon has in common is the process of expansion of urbanized areas, resulting in extension of city boundaries and significant influence over agricultural and forest (natural) landscapes. This process influence also local ecosystems and their capacity to provide their services. Since the basic understanding of ecosystem services (ES) is that ES are the benefits, which are obtained by people from nature, the urban and peri-urban influence over ecosystems change the provision of ES and also simulates different demands for ES.
The seminar will be divided into summer semester (SS 2019) and winter semester (WS 2019 – 2020). Aim of the seminar in summer semester 2019 will be twofold:
1. Analyze and understand the peri-urbanization process at the example of Rhine-Main Metropolitan region, based on collecting and assessing land use and land cover data and socio-economic data:
2. Understand how does the peri-urbanization process influence the ES provision and demand.
In WS 2019 – 2020 we will build on the experiences from SS 2019 and continue with in-depth analyses of the data collected in SS 2019.
Integral and compulsory part of the seminar in SS 2019 will be the three-day study trip to Rhine-Main Metropolitan region. The trip will take a part between 6th and 8th of May. The participants will learn about the structure of the region, about the various peri-urban locations and will record different land cover / land use and socio-ecological data.
Requirements for the seminar:
1. Interest in urbanization processes and Ecosystems Services concept;
2. Basic GIS skills;
3. English language skills.
