Course outline:
Historical pragmatics is a fairly recent branch within historical linguistics. It is placed at the intersection of various linguistic disciplines, in particular, between pragmatics, historical linguistics and historical sociolinguistics.
In this seminar we will first evaluate methodological approaches and data sources within the field and then go on to discussing micro(-level) issues such as discourse markers, terms of address, speech acts, politeness and impoliteness. At the macro level we will deal with issues such as genres and text types, e.g.: letter writing, scientific discourse, historical news discourse, etc
Finally, we will study the contribution of historical pragmatics to theories of language change by giving an outline of approaches such as grammaticalization, pragmaticalization and subjectivation.
